A bridge can restore function and replace missing teeth creating an attractive, natural look.
A bridge replaces missing teeth and is usually supported by the teeth on either side of the missing tooth or teeth. In most cases, the teeth on either side are prepared to receive a crown. Replacement teeth that blend in with your own teeth are attached in between the two crowns to create the bridge. If the teeth on either side of the gap are strong enough, your dentist may offer a Maryland bridge instead. A Maryland bridge supports a prosthetic tooth with two metal or ceramic ‘wings’ that are bonded to the supporting teeth.
Impressions are taken and when the bridge is ready and has been checked for a good colour-match and fit, it is cemented in place.
It’s important that the neighbouring teeth are sufficiently strong before choosing a bridge. It also depends on the number of missing teeth and the general oral health of the supporting gums and bone. If it is not a suitable option, your dentist can discuss other alternative solutions with you.
You will need to devote the same amount of care to brushing and flossing your bridge as you do your natural teeth along with regular check-ups.
