Crowns

A crown is used to restore the shape and function of a tooth when a filling is not an option because the damage to the tooth is too extensive.

Crowns are also used to support a dental bridge and are used in dental implants.

What is a crown?

A crown is a cap that is placed over the remaining part of a tooth so that it looks like the original tooth and blends in with the surrounding teeth. Crowns are hardwearing and natural looking.

What materials are used?

Crowns can be made from porcelain, all-ceramic, precious metal or a combination of both. Gold is known for its hard-wearing properties and porcelain bonded to precious metal is a popular choice. Porcelain-only crowns have a natural appearance that often makes them suitable for front teeth.

What does the procedure involve?

It usually takes two appointments to place a crown. At the first appointment, the tooth is numbed so that it can be prepared and made ready for the crown so that it will fit inside the new covering. A local anaesthetic will mean that you will be comfortable throughout.

Impressions are taken and a temporary cover is placed over the tooth until the colour-matched crown is ready. At the second appointment, it is checked for matching colour and fit and is then cemented into place.

When might I need a crown?

• When a filling is not adequate
• To strengthen the tooth after a root filling
• To hold a bridge or denture in place
• For an aesthetic improvement to a discoloured tooth
