Why is dental hygiene important?

Without a good dental hygiene routine, problems such as gingivitis can develop and, if left untreated, can become a more serious form of gum disease, periodontitis. Periodontitis occurs when dental plaque causes an inflammatory response that can lead to damage of the supporting structures of the tooth and eventually tooth loss.

What treatments are available?

At Six Gables Dental Practice, we can offer advice on the best cleaning methods to restore or maintain gum health. Besides an individual oral hygiene plan, we offer traditional scale and polish and Airflow Tooth Polishing which is alternative treatment using a combination of compressed air, water and a fine powder to deep clean teeth and remove stains.

What is a scale and polish?

A scale and polish treatment provides a deeper clean than traditional brushing. It is designed to remove any hardened substances attached to your teeth such as calculus.

An ultrasonic or handheld scaler is used to clean beneath and around the gum line in difficult, hard to reach areas. A jet of water washes away any debris.

Once the cleaning or scaling is complete, we use a paste to polish teeth and remove any stains so that they are restored to their normal colour. The process also smooths the tooth making it more difficult for plaque to adhere to the surface of the tooth.
