They are usually recommended when damage and decay to the tooth and its structure is too severe for a standard filling.
Both inlays and onlays are made by a dental technician to fit the shape of your tooth. Inlays fit into the grooves of the tooth. An onlay is pre-moulded to cover the cusp of a tooth. Restoring teeth with inlays and onlays is less invasive than a crown.
An impression is taken so that a precise restoration can be created to match the damaged tooth. The tooth is prepared and shaped before the inlay or onlay is placed. Your dentist will use a temporary filling to seal the cavity from further decay and prevent any sensitivity.
Impressions will be taken at an initial appointment and a local anaesthetic will be given so that you feel comfortable when the tooth is prepared. Once the inlay or onlay is ready, it is bonded to the tooth at a second appointment.
Composite, ceramic and gold materials are used to create inlays and onlays.
