A cancer screening usually only takes a matter of minutes, but it can be a lifesaver. Early detection of mouth cancer means it can be treated and increase your chance of recovery.
The inside of your mouth, soft tissue and palate, roof of the mouth, throat and underneath the tongue will be checked with a visual examination. Your dentist will then examine your jaw area, face and cheeks. Your neck and the area beneath the chin will also be examined for any signs of potential problems.
A cancer screening is not a diagnostic procedure. If your dentist spots anything of concern that might benefit from further investigation, you will be referred to a specialist for further checks.
If you have any concerns, it is also an opportunity for you to discuss them with your dentist.
